Web Reference: The Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) bus is a widely used synchronous communication protocol that enables high-speed, full-duplex data transfer between a controller device and one or more peripheral devices. Motorola 's original specification (from the early 1980s) uses four logic signals, aka lines or wires, to support full duplex communication. It is sometimes called a four-wire serial bus to contrast with three-wire variants which are half duplex, and with the two-wire I²C and 1-Wire serial buses. This article provides a brief description of the SPI interface followed by an introduction to Analog Devices’ SPI enabled switches and muxes, and how they help reduce the number of digital GPIOs in system board design. SPI is a synchronous, full duplex main-subnode-based interface.
