Instead of risking NullPointerException (NPE), Optional provides a container object that may or may not hold a non-null value. In this tutorial, we’re going to show the Optionalclass that was introduced in Java 8. The purpose of the class is to provide a type-level solution for representing optional values instead of nullreferences. To get a deeper understanding of why we should care about the Optional class, take a look at the official Oracle article. This is a value-based class; use of identity-sensitive operations (including reference equality (==), identity hash code, or synchronization) on instances of Optional may have unpredictable results and should be avoided.
