Web Reference: Jun 19, 2023 · How Does a Variable Frequency Drive Work? A variable frequency drive works by changing the frequency and voltage of the power supply to an AC motor according to its load and speed requirements. VFDs include low- and medium-voltage AC–AC and DC–AC topologies. Pulse-width modulation (PWM) variable-frequency drive projects started in the 1960s at Strömberg in Finland. Rather than just applying the full energizing power to an AC motor, a VFD works by controlling the frequency and voltage of electrical power supplied to it. A VFD allows precise adjustment of the motor's speed and torque for smoother motor starts and stops, ultimately reducing mechanical wear.
