On the other hand, the exec () system call replaces the current process with a new program. Fork is the primary method of process creation on Unix-like operating systems. In multitasking operating systems, processes (running programs) need a way to create new processes, e.g. to run other programs. Fork and its variants are typically the only way of doing so in Unix-like systems. Under Linux, fork () is implemented using copy-on-write pages, so the only penalty that it incurs is the time and memory required to duplicate the parent's page tables, and to create a unique task structure for the child.
