A function f (x) is said to be continuous from the right at a if lim x → a + f (x) = f (a). Such functions are called continuous. Other functions have points at which a break in the graph occurs, but satisfy this property over intervals contained in their domains. They are continuous on these intervals and are said to have a discontinuity at a point where a break occurs. A function ƒ is continuous over the open interval (a,b) if and only if it's continuous on every point in (a,b). ƒ is continuous over the closed interval [a,b] if and only if it's continuous on (a,b), the right-sided limit of ƒ at x=a is ƒ (a) and the left-sided limit of ƒ at x=b is ƒ (b).
