Not every function can be explicitly written in terms of the independent variable, e.g. y = f (x) and yet we will still need to know what f' (x) is. Implicit differentiation will allow us to find the derivative in these cases. How do I perform implicit differentiation? In implicit differentiation, we differentiate each side of an equation with two variables (usually x and y ) by treating one of the variables as a function of the other. Fortunately, the technique of implicit differentiation allows us to find the derivative of an implicitly defined function without ever solving for the function explicitly.
