Web Reference: Nov 14, 2025 · Pointer Arithmetic is the set of valid arithmetic operations that can be performed on pointers. The pointer variables store the memory address of another variable. It doesn't store any value. Hence, there are only a few operations that are allowed to perform on Pointers in C language. So, can we perform arithmetic operations such as addition and subtraction on the pointers? In this chapter, we will explain which arithmetic operators use pointers in C as operands, and which operations are not defined to be performed with pointers. Adding an integer (positive or negative) to a pointer is valid in C. It assumes that the pointer points to an element in an array, and advances or retracts the pointer across as many array elements as the integer specifies.
