Web Reference: Mar 17, 2026 · ArrayList in Java is a resizable array provided in the java.util package. Unlike normal arrays, its size can grow or shrink dynamically as elements are added or removed. The size, isEmpty, get, set, iterator, and listIterator operations run in constant time. The add operation runs in amortized constant time, that is, adding n elements requires O(n) time. All of the other operations run in linear time (roughly speaking). The constant factor is low compared to that for the LinkedList implementation. From Java 10, you can use the var keyword to declare an ArrayList variable without writing the type twice. The compiler figures out the type from the value you assign.
