Web Reference: In numerical analysis and scientific computing, the backward Euler method (or implicit Euler method) is one of the most basic numerical methods for the solution of ordinary differential equations. If lim z → ∞ g (z) = 0, quickly decaying solutions lead to quickly decaying numerical solutions. This is the case for the implicit Euler, but not for the Crank-Nicolson. This property is called L -stability. One observes (slowly decreasing) oscillations with the CR - method when τ λ is large. Implicit methods can be used to replace explicit ones in cases where the stability requirements of the latter impose stringent conditions on the time step size.
