The latter is a system for representing letters of the alphabet, numerals, and punctuation marks by arranging dots, dashes, and spaces. Beginning in the 1930s, both civilian and military pilots were required to be able to use Morse code, both for use with early communications systems and for identification of navigational beacons that transmitted continuous two- or three-letter identifiers in Morse code.
