Not every function can be explicitly written in terms of the independent variable, e.g. y = f (x) and yet we will still need to know what f' (x) is. Implicit differentiation will allow us to find the derivative in these cases. A function can be explicit or implicit: Explicit: "y = some function of x". When we know x we can calculate y directly. Implicit: "some function of y and x equals something else". Knowing x does not lead directly to y. Fortunately, the technique of implicit differentiation allows us to find the derivative of an implicitly defined function without ever solving for the function explicitly.
