It’s used to set up a personalized environment by defining command aliases, shell functions, custom prompts, and environment variables. The purpose of a .bashrc file is to provide a place where you can set up variables, functions and aliases, define your (PS1) prompt and define other settings that you want to use every time you open a new terminal window. The quickest way to access it is nano ~/.bashrc from a terminal (replace nano with whatever you like to use). If this is not present in a user's home folder the system-wide .bashrc is used as a fallback as it is loaded before the user's file.
